Kathy Marcus had years of experience in cosmetology and massage therapy when a move to South Carolina set things in motion for her to become a business owner. Marcus obtained cosmetology and massage therapy licenses at a young age and soon launched an illustrious career running two salons and a cosmetic company in Long Island, N.Y. A move to Myrtle Beach, S.C., meant that Marcus had to rebuild a client following in a new market. She soon made a name for herself in local salons and spas by providing exceptional services. In 2012, Marcus decided to strike out on her own and now spearheads an award-winning salon called Jonas Marc Style Studio.
Jonas Marc Style Studio won 44 awards in six years including SCORE’s Start Up Business Award for 2013-14. Within the course of a year, Marcus opened her company and expanded to the building next door, thereby doubling the location’s footprint from 1200 to 2400 square feet. She soon opened a second location and is currently considering opening a third.
When Marcus moved from New York to South Carolina she quickly learned that she had to adapt her marketing and management techniques to fit her new surroundings. Her SCORE mentors, Ray Binis and John Lamoree, helped her define the roles of employees within the company. They also worked with staff on team-building exercises. Clarity in performance expectations and responsibilities led to increased morale and, ultimately, increased revenues.
Marcus advises prospective entrepreneurs to, “Align yourself with like-minded people, have a support system in place, and call SCORE. You will be glad you did.”
